Feathered Hunters Spark Hope: Barn Owl Boom Clears Rodent Plague Across WA Wheatbelt and Midwest
A spectacular surge in barn owl populations is helping WA farmers naturally combat a severe mouse plague. Local wildlife groups and landholders report a rare breeding boom, though experts warn of challenges ahead as food sources dwindle.
Barn owl populations are soaring across Western Australia’s Midwest and Wheatbelt regions in a welcome ecological boom triggered by a recent rodent plague. Local landholders and wildlife conservationists are reporting a dramatic increase in sightings of the majestic birds of prey, which are currently fledging across the region.
A Natural Solution to a Rodent Crisis
In Chapman Valley, hobby farmer Melanie Pugh experienced the phenomenon firsthand when she discovered seven baby barn owl chicks nesting inside a grain silo on her property. Large clutches of this size are exceptionally rare in the wild, typically only occurring when food is incredibly abundant.
According to Ms. Pugh, the presence of the owls coincided with a rapid decline in the local mouse population. In May, she was trapping up to 150 mice a day on her farm; by late July, that number had plummeted to just 10. Research indicates that a mother owl must catch five mice per night for each of her chicks, plus herself, over a ten-week period to keep them fed. With seven hungry mouths to feed, the family of owls proved to be highly efficient pest controllers.
Nesting Box Success and Safer Baits
Further south in Moora, local wildlife group Carnaby’s Crusaders reported an "explosion" of breeding barn owls. Group spokesperson Dean Arthurell noted that multiple active nests were discovered in artificial hollows originally installed to support endangered Carnaby's cockatoos.
While the nesting boxes were designed for cockatoos, conservationists have welcomed the owls, noting that their breeding cycle should wrap up before the cockatoos begin nesting later in the season. The dramatic spike in rodents throughout the grain-growing region has provided an ideal environment for the birds to raise multiple healthy clutches.
Wildlife experts also credit the successful breeding season to a shift in community habits. Carer Michelle Jones pointed out that local education campaigns have successfully prompted residents to swap out lethal second-generation anticoagulant rodent poisons for owl-safe alternatives. This reduction in secondary poisoning has dramatically improved survival rates for young chicks compared to previous years.
The Impending 'Bust' Cycle
While the sudden population spike is currently helping farmers control pests, experts warn that a natural correction is on the horizon. Barn owls are famous for their "boom and bust" population cycles, which are closely tied to food availability.
Janelle Ende, who runs the rehabilitation organization Just Raptors, warned that as winter temperatures drop and mouse breeding slows, competition for food will become fierce. She expects a sharp rise in malnourished, exhausted, and displaced juvenile owls as they search for new territory.
Ms. Ende advised community members who spot a displaced owl not to disturb the bird, but to contact a licensed local wildlife rehabilitator for advice. Residents looking to support local bird populations safely are encouraged to construct and install custom-made owl boxes on their properties to provide secure shelter.
