Editorial guidelines
These guidelines set out how Western Australia Today gathers, checks and publishes the news. They apply to every reporter and editor working on this masthead and to every story we run.
Accuracy and sourcing
We would rather be right than first. Every factual claim in a story is checked against a named source, a document, or direct observation by a reporter before it is published.
Where a story relies on a single source, we say so. Where we cannot verify a claim, we do not publish it as fact — we either attribute it plainly or leave it out.
Fairness and right of reply
Anyone who is the subject of significant criticism in a story is given a fair and timely opportunity to respond, and their response is carried in the story.
We do not misrepresent who we are when reporting, and we identify ourselves as journalists when gathering information.
Independence
Western Australia Today is editorially independent. Advertisers, sponsors and commercial partners have no say over what we cover or how we cover it.
Sponsored and commercial content is clearly labelled as such and is kept visually distinct from editorial reporting.
Corrections
When we get something wrong we correct it openly. Corrections are made on the original story, with a note explaining what changed and when.

Use of AI and automation
Automated tools may assist with tasks such as transcription, translation, and summarising public documents. Editorial judgement, verification and final sign-off always rest with a human editor.
