A 59-year-old garbage truck driver has been charged with dangerous driving causing death after a collision in Perth's south-east killed a 70-year-old pedestrian.

The incident occurred on September 7 in Queens Park, when the truck reversed into the elderly man, An Yu, as he walked down Balaka Way. CCTV footage captured the moment the truck knocked him down, and he was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but could not be saved.

Police said the driver, from the southern suburb of Riverton, has been charged over the incident and is due to appear in court in November.

Neighbours described An Yu as a quiet, sweet man who walked slowly after suffering a stroke a few years ago. Residents said they saw him regularly going for morning and afternoon walks.
