Uncovering the Ancient Secrets of Juukan Gorge
Archaeologists uncover ancient secrets of WA's Juukan Gorge. Traditional owners are helping to preserve their cultural heritage for future generations.
Deep in Western Australia's outback, Burchell Hayes has visited the newly unearthed bedrock of a sacred rock shelter overlooking Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara, where archaeologists have discovered a vast array of extraordinary artefacts preserved in the arid soil.
The site, which has yielded artefacts dating back 50,000 years to when Aboriginal people first arrived in the region, is being hailed as one of the most significant in Australian archaeology. The finds include a finely crafted cutting tool used by Hayes' ancestors thousands of years ago.
