All indecent assault charges against regional Western Australian doctor John George Mateljan have been dropped, bringing an abrupt end to a high-profile legal battle just a week before his trial was scheduled to begin.

The 74-year-old Geraldton general practitioner was charged by detectives in August 2025 following allegations of indecently assaulting three women. The accusations stemmed from incidents alleged to have occurred during medical consultations and within regional hospital environments. From the outset, Dr. Mateljan vehemently denied all allegations and maintained a plea of not guilty.

During a hearing at the Geraldton Magistrate's Court on Monday, prosecutors formally discontinued the charges, admitting to the court that there were no longer any reasonable prospects of achieving a conviction. Following the prosecution's decision, Magistrate Melita Medcalf officially dismissed the case, removed Dr. Mateljan’s bail conditions, and awarded him $45,000 in court costs.

Strict Medical Restrictions Remain Active

While Dr. Mateljan has been cleared of all criminal charges, his professional practice remains heavily restricted by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Under the active conditions imposed on his registration, Dr. Mateljan is barred from having any direct, in-person contact with patients who identify as women, girls, or non-binary. He is only permitted to consult with these demographics via telehealth services. Additionally, his medical practice remains restricted solely to Geraldton's Victoria District Medical Centre.

These professional limitations will remain in place indefinitely unless they are formally lifted by the AHPRA board or successfully appealed by Dr. Mateljan.
