Australian Man's Troubled Past Surfaces Amidst Gruesome Pattaya Murder Allegations
A 45-year-old Australian man, Simon Peter Carman, now facing serious allegations in Thailand, appears to have spent a significant portion of the last decade living a reclusive life, estranged from many friends and family members in Australia.
Mr. Carman, originally from Victoria but raised in Western Australia, reportedly had minimal contact with his parents and siblings. He had developed a preference for living in Thailand, where he had been residing since late last year. It is in a room in the city of Pattaya, a destination known globally for its vibrant nightlife, that Thai authorities allege a brutal murder took place.
A Life of Isolation and Change
Individuals who knew Mr. Carman have described a man who largely withdrew from social circles. His formative years were spent in the small regional town of Jerramungup before his family relocated to Albany on the state's south coast during his teenage years. He worked as a truck driver for a period, but a workplace injury led to his reliance on pain medication. According to acquaintances, he attributed subsequent weight gain to this medication, and it was around this time that he began to distance himself from both friends and family in Western Australia.
One family friend commented on the unusual nature of such a withdrawal, stating, "When people cut themselves off from people, well, it's not a normal thing to do."
Records indicate that Mr. Carman had previous dealings with law enforcement in Western Australia, including incidents where his firearms were confiscated. His gun license was suspended in 2023, and subsequent attempts to have it reinstated were unsuccessful.
Before the global COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Carman was understood to have frequented Thailand. He returned to Australia during the pandemic and was last known to be living in a unit within a commercial complex in an industrial area of Rockingham, a southern suburb of Perth. His social media activity in the year prior to his return to Thailand reportedly included a mix of approving and critical comments on women's photographs, sometimes inquiring about their locations.
Allegations in Pattaya
Mr. Carman reportedly returned to Pattaya late last year and had remained there. On June 26th, Thai police received a report regarding the disappearance of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla, who was last seen being picked up by a foreigner on Beach Road. Investigators tracked the teenager's movements to Mr. Carman's rented accommodation, but neither individual was present.
Mr. Carman was apprehended at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport as he attempted to board a flight back to Australia. Arresting officers noted scratch marks on his neck and arms. However, Ms. Donhomla remained missing.
CCTV footage became crucial evidence. It allegedly captured Mr. Carman leaving his room the previous night with a substantial suitcase, returning approximately half an hour later without it. Police later discovered a suitcase matching the description near train tracks, a short drive from Mr. Carman's building. Authorities allege that inside this suitcase was the body of the 17-year-old, discovered curled up with her belongings.
Ms. Donhomla's family reported that her face was bruised and swollen, and she had suffered broken teeth.
Confession and Denial
During police questioning, Mr. Carman initially denied any involvement, claiming Ms. Donhomla had disappeared while he was asleep. However, as evidence mounted, police stated that Mr. Carman confessed to killing the teenager. Despite this alleged confession, the 45-year-old has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, concealing a body, and related offenses.
Police report that Mr. Carman claimed the teenager had threatened him following a dispute over money. In a recorded message to Ms. Donhomla's family, Mr. Carman described her death as being "out of my control" and urged other girls to "just to be careful."
The family of Ms. Donhomla is reportedly seeking the death penalty should Mr. Carman be convicted.
The Night of the Alleged Incident
Tunchanok Donhomla, known affectionately as "Cake," had reportedly traveled to Pattaya from her hometown of Kalasin the week prior to the alleged murder. Witnesses claim she encountered Mr. Carman on a beachside street around 2 a.m., following an earlier rejection at a bar where he appeared intoxicated. CCTV footage reportedly shows him holding the teenager's hand as they entered his condominium building at 3:34 a.m.
According to police, Mr. Carman admitted to squeezing her neck until she lost consciousness. Approximately three hours later, he was allegedly seen on camera leaving the room alone, dressed in different clothing and carrying a small plastic bag. Police allege that Mr. Carman kept Ms. Donhomla's body in his bathroom while attending to his daily activities, including washing clothes and speaking with neighbors.
Later that night, CCTV allegedly showed Mr. Carman dragging a suitcase from his room, which police contend contained the teenager's body. It is further alleged that he packed the suitcase with all of the teenager's belongings in an attempt to remove evidence from his room.
The following day, Ms. Donhomla's friend reportedly confronted Mr. Carman in his room regarding her whereabouts. Mr. Carman departed for the airport later that day, where he was subsequently arrested.
News of the arrest has reportedly shocked those who knew Mr. Carman but had lost contact with him years prior. One family friend expressed his distress, stating, "I've got three girls. The oldest one is 17. I felt a bit sick in the stomach, to tell you the truth. I just feel sorry for the family, and for everyone involved. It was a horrible thing to have happened."
