Samantha Jade on Love, Loss, and Her Musical Evolution: 'You Have to Ride the Waves'
Australian pop sensation Samantha Jade opens up about her latest EP, her deeply personal journey with anxiety, and how her rich multicultural heritage continues to shape her life and career.
Australian pop sweetheart Samantha Jade is back in the spotlight with the release of her highly anticipated new EP, Love.Sick Vol 2. The collection of songs captures the perfect blend of sugary pop and mature, reflective songwriting that has come to define her career. But behind the glittering melodies lies an artist who has weathered the extreme highs and lows of the music industry and emerged stronger than ever.
A Partnership Built on Harmony
For Jade, music isn't just a career; it is the heartbeat of her household. Her marriage to music executive Pat Handlin represents a true creative alignment. Handlin, who works in Artists and Repertoire (A&R), plays a vital role in helping artists shape their sound, a talent Jade deeply respects.
"With Pat and I, one of the things we really connected on was music because he loves music as well," Jade shared. "He has great ears so he can hear what the mix needs." The couple often spends hours diving deep into musical rabbit holes, exploring everything from old-school classics to movie soundtracks. "Couples have their little thing that they do, and ours really is music," she added.
Riding the Rollercoaster of Stardom
Jade's journey in the entertainment world began at the tender age of 16 when she left Lockridge in Perth for Los Angeles, signing a massive deal with Jive Records—the label home to superstars like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Despite the early promise, her path was far from smooth. Even during her victorious run on The X Factor, she faced the threat of elimination multiple times.
"I really am a believer in 'things are written' and things are as they're going to be," Jade reflected. "You just have to ride the waves. I do have days all the time where I'm like, 'I should just quit.' But I try very hard to live by the idea that you go through stuff for a reason."
That resilience was on full display during her recent standout run on Dancing with the Stars, where she finished as runner-up. While she describes the experience as "the best," it was bittersweet. Jade's mother passed away from cancer in 2014, and her absence is still keenly felt during major life milestones. "My mum would have just loved this," Jade said. "She's the person that I would call when anything went wrong, when everything went right."
Embracing Heritage and Mental Health Advocacy
Away from the stage, Jade is deeply connected to her multicultural background. Raised by a mother of Scottish descent and a father with Indian heritage, she grew up surrounded by her close-knit Indian family. "I literally grew up on curry and rice, watching Bollywood films with my nana," she said proudly. "I'm very, very proud of my culture."
As she continues to evolve as an artist, Jade is also using her platform to break down stigma surrounding mental health. Having battled crippling anxiety, she believes open conversation is crucial. "When it first happened, I didn't speak about it," she admitted. "But the only thing that made me feel better during that time was knowing that pretty much everyone has dealt with it. If sharing my story can help one or two people, then that's good enough for me."
With her new music out now and a renewed sense of purpose, Samantha Jade remains one of Australia's most enduring and relatable talents.
