A local mother is calling for an end to age-based support for children with type 1 diabetes in primary schools, saying the current system is unfair and puts families under pressure.

Alana Marshall's son Declan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at five years old and has received extra support in the classroom since starting school in Capel, about 200 kilometres south of Perth.

In Western Australia, individual disability allocation funding for children with type 1 diabetes is provided until the end of year two. While schools can apply for funding extensions, Marshall said it was frustrating to be told her son would have to manage his condition on his own at the age of eight.
