Dockers fans to tie the knot outside MCG before AFL grand final

A diehard Fremantle Dockers fan couple will tie the knot outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday, just hours before their beloved team competes in the AFL grand final.

Matt Abbott and Danni Bloomfield, who have been together for 15 years, have flown in from Karratha to Melbourne for their special day. The couple, who are getting married outside Gate 3 of the MCG, have also been joined by two friends from Western Australia.

The pair initially planned to get married during Danni's 50th birthday party, but after hearing that one of their friends was flying to Melbourne for the grand final, they decided to change their plans.

"I may have had a few beers and sent a snapshot of flights to Danni," Matt said. "The next thing we were going to Melbourne."

The couple then decided to take their wedding to the MCG, where they will get married before heading into the stadium to watch the Dockers play in the grand final.

"We've just been on this rollercoaster since then," Danni added. "We've never done anything normally."

Danni, who was once a West Coast fan, has been converted to a Dockers supporter by Matt.

"He bleeds purple," she said. "I'm Freo through and through now."

The couple had planned a purple wedding dress, but due to delivery issues, Danni will be wearing a more traditional dress, with purple accents.

"There was a slight issue with the purple dress being delayed," she said. "I had assurances that it would be here but got a notification yesterday that's it's due for delivery Monday so there was some panic shopping yesterday."

Matt and Danni's families are supportive of their plans, despite Matt's father being a "full Eagle".

Luke Lalor, a long-time friend of Danni's, will be officiating the wedding.

"The fact that we're doing it exactly where they want it ... I think it's fantastic," Luke said. "It is a real wedding, I am a real celebrant and it will be formally legal."

Matt became emotional when asked what it would mean to him if Fremantle wins the grand final.

"Now I'll probably tear up," he said. "[It will mean] everything, it would be so amazing to see them just for so many years of being the underdogs and for them to get through to the grand final and arguably play one of the best teams ... if they pull this off, it's just going to be a fairytale,"

The couple says they are not known for "doing anything normal" and are happy to bring some joy to people on a day that is usually filled with sadness in the media.

"It's pretty full on," Matt said. "We sort of didn't think it was going to be a big deal," Danni said. "If we can bring something joyful to people when there's so much sadness in the media and the news, so be it."
