The Perth Bears' journey to their 2027 NRL debut has gained significant momentum with the spectacular unveiling of their inaugural playing strip and the announcement of lucrative salary cap concessions designed to help the expansion club land marquee talent.

In a dramatic launch spanning two states, the club literally dropped their new design from the light towers of Perth’s historic WACA Ground during a live-streamed event linked with North Sydney. The jersey features iconic red hoops on a black background, a proud nod to the heritage of the North Sydney Bears, who last played in the top flight in 1999.

Club Chief Executive Anthony De Ceglie expressed immense confidence in the expansion franchise's trajectory, stating the team is firmly on track to secure 35,000 foundation members by the time they kick off their inaugural season. De Ceglie was joined at the announcement by WA Premier Roger Cook, head coach Mal Meninga, and Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) Chairman Peter V'landys.

Crucial Financial Boosts to Lure Marquee Stars

To help the newcomers build a highly competitive squad, V'landys announced a major financial boost. The Bears will receive a 20 percent salary cap dispensation for any marquee player signed on a contract exceeding $1 million.

"They will be given a 20 per cent dispensation for any player above a million dollars," V'landys explained. "If the player is worth $1.5 million, they can pay another 20 per cent from a sponsor and that won't be counted in the salary cap. So that gives them the opportunity to get somebody because they've got a 20 per cent bonus for that player from the sponsor."

In another significant structural advantage, the Bears will hold the first right of refusal for any contracted player seeking an early release from their current club for the 2027 season. V'landys noted this mechanism would likely see high-quality players looking for a fresh start head West.

Meninga Backs the Roster

While the concessions provide a major war chest, inaugural head coach Mal Meninga insisted he is already highly satisfied with the squad's development and downplayed the immediate need to chase a single marquee signing.

"We've worked within the conditions of obviously our entry into the NRL and... let me be frank with this... I'm really excited about the roster we've built," Meninga said. "You look through the team, we've got some high-profile players already. We've certainly got players of the future, there's no doubt."

The Perth venture has also received a warm reception from veteran Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy, who praised Meninga's leadership and expressed excitement for the league's growth. The Storm have already lost utility star Tyran Wishart and outside back Nick Meaney to the Bears for 2027, departures Bellamy accepted with grace.

"They're very excited to be coming over here," Bellamy said of his departing players. "They're obviously doing what they think's best for them and best for their families. They're still doing a great job for us. That's just the way the game is."
