Perth is currently the only state capital in Australia without a major writers' festival, following the Perth writers' festival's uncertain future. The event, which was a part of the Perth Festival since its inception in 1953, had become a standalone event known as Perth Writers Week by 2018.
In 2024, the festival organisers announced that the event would be taking a break in 2025 and planned to return with a refreshed event in early 2026. However, it is now unclear when, or if, the festival will return.
