A 30-year-old Western Australian police officer has pleaded guilty to assaulting his five-week-old baby in a case that has shocked the community.
Nickolas Wayne Peake appeared at the Midland Magistrates court today charged with aggravated common assault. In a statement, WA police said detectives from the Child Abuse Squad laid the charges on Sunday after the assault, and the baby was taken to Perth Children's Hospital as a precaution.
"He was released on bail after pleading guilty to the charge," a police spokesperson said. Peake declined to answer any questions from the media outside court.
WA police said Peake, a serving officer, had been stood down. He is due back in court next month.
